Google Voice Typing covers two free tools. In Google Docs and Slides (Chrome, Edge or Safari) you open Tools > Voice typing, click the microphone and dictate; Google's help says the browser's speech-to-text service processes the audio, and Docs lists 119 languages and accents (62 languages) plus English-only editing and formatting commands. On phones, the Gboard keyboard's microphone types by voice in most apps on Android and iOS, with spoken punctuation and word replacement. On Pixel 6 and later, Gboard's advanced voice typing runs on the device, adds punctuation automatically, understands commands such as "delete last word" and switches languages automatically; Pixel 8 adds "Fix it" proofreading and Pixel 11 adds the Gemini-based Rambler mode.

Pros

  • Free with a Google account or Gboard; Docs voice typing supports 119 languages and accents with no setup
  • Extensive English editing and formatting commands in Docs (select, bold, headings, alignment)
  • On Pixel 6 and later, Gboard voice typing is on-device with automatic punctuation, voice commands and language auto-switching

Cons

  • On desktop it only works inside Google Docs and Slides in a supported browser, not in other apps
  • Docs relies on spoken punctuation and offers voice commands in English only; no custom dictionary
  • On-device processing, auto-punctuation and automatic language switching are Pixel-only; other Android and iOS devices use cloud recognition
