LazyTyper is a free desktop voice typing app from independent developer oldcai. Hold the global hotkey (Option+Tab on macOS, Alt+Tab on Windows), speak, and the text is inserted at the cursor in any app — editors, terminals, browsers and chat clients. It ships twelve speech models: cloud engines including Doubao, ElevenLabs, Groq Whisper, Mistral Voxtral and AssemblyAI, plus five on-device models for offline use, switchable at any time. The app handles mixed Chinese, English and Japanese in one sentence without switching languages, adds punctuation automatically, and records unlimited-length audio with automatic segmentation. Audio goes directly to the provider you choose rather than through LazyTyper servers, and API keys and settings stay on the device. Builds are published on GitHub for Windows, macOS (universal, notarised) and Linux as .deb, .rpm and AppImage.

Pros

  • Free with no ads or subscription, and all twelve models including the local ones are available
  • Five on-device models for offline transcription; audio is sent straight to your chosen provider
  • Mixed Chinese, English and Japanese in one sentence; Windows, macOS and Linux builds

Cons

  • Cloud engines require your own API keys, which the onboarding asks you to create per provider
  • Recent Linux and nightly builds are pre-releases; the last stable tags are macOS/Windows 1.9.1
  • No dictation history, custom vocabulary or voice commands documented, and the site's own FAQ still says an internet connection is required
