Speechnotes is a free speech-to-text notepad that runs in Chrome or Edge with no login or install, with a companion Chrome extension for voice typing on other sites and an Android app with more than 5 million downloads. Recognition is delegated to the browser (Chrome or Edge) or to Android's speech recognizer, so audio never reaches Speechnotes' servers; the Android listing states it also works offline. Intermediate results appear in a buffer as you speak, punctuation is inserted by voice command or by clicking, sentences are capitalized automatically and notes auto-save in the browser with export to Google Drive, .txt or .doc. The notepad is free with ads and unlimited dictation; Premium removes ads and unlocks premium extension features for $1.9 per month billed once per year without auto-renewal. A separate pay-as-you-go transcription service handles audio and video files at $0.1 per minute.

Pros

  • Free, unlimited dictation with no account, download or install; notes are stored locally in the browser
  • Premium is $22.80 for a year and does not auto-renew; a 100% refund policy is stated
  • Audio and video files can be transcribed with timestamps, speaker labels and .srt export for $0.1 per minute

Cons

  • A notepad, not a system-wide tool: on desktop it dictates into its own page or, via the extension, into web forms only
  • No automatic punctuation, custom vocabulary or language auto-detection; punctuation is dictated or clicked
  • Free version shows ads; recognition quality depends on the browser's or Android's speech engine
