Windows Voice Typing is the dictation feature built into Windows 10 and Windows 11. Press Windows+H (or the microphone button on the touch keyboard) with the cursor in any text box, wait for "Listening...", and speak. Microsoft states that it uses online speech recognition powered by Azure Speech services and requires an internet connection. Windows 11 supports 46 language-region variants (36 languages), with an automatic punctuation toggle, a profanity filter and voice commands such as "delete that", "select that" and spoken punctuation. On Copilot+ PCs, Fluid dictation uses an on-device small language model to correct grammar, punctuation and filler words as you speak (English only, enabled by default).

Pros

  • Free and preinstalled; works in any text box on Windows 10 and 11 with a single Win+H shortcut
  • Automatic punctuation, profanity filter and editing commands such as "delete that" and "press Enter" in 46 locales
  • Fluid dictation on Copilot+ PCs fixes grammar, punctuation and filler words on-device while you speak

Cons

  • Requires an internet connection; recognition runs on Azure, not on the device
  • Fluid dictation is limited to Copilot+ PCs and English; other PCs get verbatim output only
  • No custom vocabulary, no automatic language detection (input language must be switched manually) and no dictation history
